Me As A Consumer Of Music

Music is an important part of my every day life. I listen to it for the majority of the day in school, at work or just when I am out an about.

There are several genres of music that I like; these include hip-hop, pop, acoustic, rap, rock and grime. Very upbeat music like Dubstep/drum and bass is also good for when I am at the gym as well as it helps you to prepare you for the exercise you are about to do. Some of these genres are very different to each other but they all have individual areas within which I am very fond of. Hip-hop music is good as it can be enjoyed by everyone at anytime so you cant really go wrong with it but when it comes to a genre like Grime, this may be seen as unpleasant to some people as it has a lot of profanity involved within the lyrics. However, as Grime is becoming more and more popular within this modern age, it is starting to become more accepted and played on radios more but just in a ‘clean’ version.

The genres of music that I enjoy listening to the least are things like Oprah and Classical. The slow and dull tempo of the songs bore me and doesn’t interest me in the slightest.  Another genre that I don’t like too much as well is Heavy metal. I see it as a type of music that just involves playing your instruments very loud and fast, and then the artists scream and shout at the top of there voices as well to simply enhance the pain that comes to your ears when you listen to it.

There is a range of artists that all feature in different genres of music that I am interested in but Ed Sheeran is my favourite out of them all. His style of blending acoustic sound with hip-hop elements like rapping creates a type of music that really appeals to me. Its not just me who has an interest in Ed Sheeran however as Ed is the most streamed artist in the UK for 2015 and sold over 10 million copies of his incredibly successful album ‘X’ in the worldwide. Other artists that appeal hugely to me are Eminem, Tinie Tempah, Stormzy and a bit of AC DC doesn’t go a miss with their song ‘Back in Black’. At this current point of time, my go to song however is Alan Walker’s ‘Faded’.

Whilst growing up there hasn’t been a huge amount of things that have determined the type of music I listen to. As I have an older brother it was easy to pick up on some types of music through him as we were together a lot and naturally I started listening to the same music. Other things like listening to the radio in the car and going to parties helped me to pick up on different types of music whilst growing up. The most influential way of picking up new music for me however is by just hanging out with friends and sharing new songs that we have found.

I listen to music all of the time. When I’m in the shower, walking to school, at school, in my room. So basically whenever I can. Most of the time I listen to it through earphones as I can shut myself out from other people and focus on my music and work that I might be doing. Other than earphones though I use speakers to play music as it adds more bass and quality to the sound, rather than playing it through the speaker just on my phone that is very quite and tinny.

The most common way of listening to music is through my IPhone. It has apps that allows me to download and store hundreds of songs which means I’m never short of music and means I’m never going to go bored. The app I use most regularly is Spotify. Spotify allows me to search for songs, albums and artists and then download them onto my IPhone for as long as I would like. I can create playlists of my favourite songs as well which I do most of the time. Spotify is a free app but if you pay £5 per month, you can upgrade to premium which gives you access to having songs offline without Wi-Fi and internet connection. This means that I am paying for my music but not actually purchasing each individual song. I just get access to as many songs as I like but just need to download them.
